The 4-7-8 breathing technique has helped so many people build resilience to stress and anxiety. Although developed by Dr. Andrew Weil, it is based on an ancient breathwork technique called pranayama. This is a great way to gain control of our breath which inadvertently controls our heart rate and body's relaxation process. Breathwork has been used for centuries to regulate the fight or flight response or stress response. When you are feeling overwhelmed or anxious you can very quickly drop into this technique for a few minutes and pull your body into the parasympathetic nervous phase. This is the body's phase of rest and digest. It will calm and soothe your nervous system while calming your mind. There are multiple breathing techniques, however, the 4-7-8 is easy to learn and can be done in as little as 3 minutes. The key to success here is consistency. The more you do it, the quicker your body's relaxation response.
